The Tokatab Method

A piano method born in a teacher's studio, built for learning on your own

Our CEO is a piano teacher. Before writing a single line of code, we watched hundreds of aspiring pianists. Tokatab is our answer to what we saw.

Two hands playing a grand piano

Why Tokatab

Learning piano alone often means giving up too soon

Every year, many people take up the piano and invest in gear… then stop before they can play the songs they love. Here is what gets in the way.

A teacher isn’t for everyone

It’s the best option, but it costs time and money, and you don’t always want weekly corrections when you play for fun.

Miracle promises

“Pianist in 2 days”? Not true. Playing well takes time. But you can start having fun within a few weeks.

Bad habits

Posture, fingering, wrists, pedal… Alone in front of a screen, you pick up reflexes that become very hard to fix.

YouTube tutorials

Fun at first, but nobody helps when you get stuck. And constantly rewinding isn’t practical.

Game-like apps

Hitting the right keys in the right order to earn stars isn’t playing the piano. Often, fingerings aren’t even shown.

Our goal

To let you sit down at a piano and play the songs you love, with both hands.

Pillar 1

Real learning, without the headache

Developed with the CNRS

Our teaching builds solid foundations: movements, rhythms, techniques. No repeating notes one by one like in a video game.

Piano roll or sheet music, your choice

No need to read music: follow the notes falling onto the keyboard, fingering included. Already read music? Switch to sheet music in one click.

Fun from the very first days

Simplified arrangements and short challenges let you play a real song quickly, then the original versions as you progress.

Pillar 2

A learning path that adapts to you

Like a teacher, only virtual

From the first minutes, Tokatab builds your path and keeps adjusting it to your successes and struggles.

The right exercise at the right time

Need to work on a thumb crossing or a type of chord? We suggest the right exercise, out of more than 1,000 exercises and videos.

Songs that reinforce what you’ve learned

Just nailed a song? Our recommendation engine suggests others that use the same skills.

Pillar 3

A repertoire chosen for quality

Every piece carefully arranged

Fingerings shown, hands separated, often several versions per piece so you can play it whatever your level.

Classical and royalty-free

The Tokatab repertoire only includes classical or royalty-free pieces. The techniques you learn with Chopin, Beethoven or Mozart will then help you play the Beatles or Lady Gaga, for example by importing your own scores.

Your own songs

Import your scores in MusicXML format and practise them with your virtual teacher.

Our commitments

What guides Tokatab every day

Transparency

No magic method. Progressing at the piano takes regular practice, and we help you measure and feel your progress at every step.

Playing by heart

The screen is for learning the notes. Our goal: that you play every piece without your phone, the next time you come across a piano in a train station.

Accessible to all

Music belongs to everyone. Tokatab is affordable enough to use on its own, or alongside a teacher.

Wherever you go

On computer, tablet or smartphone: your piano teacher goes wherever you are.
