Frequently Asked Questions

Any questions about Tokatab?

I've never played piano in my life, can I use Tokatab?

Tokatab is for users of all levels; it's the perfect app for learning piano if you're a complete beginner, but it also allows more experienced pianists to have fun discovering new pieces or strengthening their skills. Methods that promise to make you a virtuoso in a few months are lying, of course; and we don't have that pretense. However, we promise you'll progress quickly by playing pieces you enjoy, while building solid musical and technical foundations. To learn more about the Tokatab method, read this article!

Do I need to know music theory to use Tokatab?

The Tokatab method is designed to learn piano without music theory; so no musical knowledge is needed to play and have fun on Tokatab. However, our personalized lessons will gradually introduce some music theory elements that will help you progress. We offer a choice between two musical representation modes: sheet music mode, useful if you already know how to read music; and a "piano roll" mode, which allows you to play any piece even if you can't read notes.

On which devices can I use Tokatab?

Tokatab is available on all devices and screen sizes: laptop, tablets, smartphones (Android and iOS); at home, on vacation, on the train, a small MIDI keyboard and your phone are all you need to play piano!

Do I need a MIDI-compatible digital piano to use Tokatab?

Having a MIDI keyboard is highly recommended to benefit from Tokatab's real-time assistance, which will detect your difficulties and adapt to your learning; however, it's not mandatory. We have other methods that will allow you to progress even without a connected keyboard.

Is Tokatab a paid application?

Tokatab does indeed offer a paid subscription to learn piano. Our pricing is available here. Transparency is one of our values, so our prices are calculated to be as accessible as possible while allowing us to compensate the team that maintains the product as well as all the artists and rights holders. You can test the product for free thanks to the free offer, which gives you access to 5 pieces of content per week, with no commitment or credit card required. You can thus discover Tokatab and see if it suits you before subscribing.

Tokatab - Listen Mode

Tokatab - Listen Mode

Learning piano alone is possible, but it can sometimes lack direct feedback on what you're playing. You may already know Tokatab's MIDI mode, which allows the application to follow your playing via a keyboard connected by USB. But what about acoustic pianos or non-connected keyboards? That's where listen mode comes in!

Scales

Scales

When starting piano, we often hear about scales. They're present in all styles of music and constitute an essential foundation for pianists. If you've ever wondered why certain pieces seem to flow naturally under the fingers, or how to develop better ease at the keyboard, scales are the key to the answer.

Key Signatures

Key Signatures

When you open a sheet music, one of the first things you notice, just to the right of the clef, are these sharps or flats aligned at the beginning of the staff. This is what we call "key signatures". But what exactly are they for? And how to interpret them on piano?

Tessitura

Tessitura

When we talk about "tessitura," we often think of singing. Yet, this term also concerns musical instruments, including the piano. If you've ever wondered why certain notes sound better in one region of the keyboard than another, or how a pianist can play such varied pieces moving from bass to treble, tessitura is the key to the answer.
